Sierra Morena

It is one of the gems of traditional Spanish sericulture.

• Voltinism: Univoltine (only one generation per year, requires winter cold for the eggs).

• Characteristics: The larva is very dark striped, almost black in some stages, which allows it to absorb heat better.

• Cocoon: Large, elliptical, and pure white. It is very rustic and tolerates temperature variations in southern Spain well.

W32

This is a line of Japanese origin, mainly used in research and industrial crosses.

• Voltinism: Bivoltine (can have two cycles per year).

• Characteristics: The larva is plain white (without markings). It is widely used in laboratories because it has a very stable and predictable growth cycle.

• Cocoon: White, with the classic Japanese "peanut" shape (constricted in the middle).

Aburako (Oil or Transparent)

Its name comes from the Japanese abura (oil), due to the appearance of its skin.

• Voltinism: Depends on the line, but is usually Bivoltine.

• Characteristics: It is a mutation where the larva lacks pigments in the skin and urate crystals, which makes it translucent. Internal organs and the pumping of hemolymph (blood) can be seen.

• Cocoon: Usually white and medium-sized. It is a more delicate variety than the others.

Spanish Striped

Often confused with Sierra Morena, but with distinct markings.

• Voltinism: Univoltine.

• Characteristics: The larva has the typical black stripes on a light background, but less saturated than in Sierra Morena. It is the "traditional" silkworm in Spanish schools.

• Cocoon: Usually yellow or orange, although there are lines selected in white.

Robis

It is a modern commercial hybrid, very popular among amateur breeders for its attractiveness.

• Voltinism: Bivoltine (reproduces easily in the same year).

• Characteristics: The larvae are very white and vigorous. They are famous for their high survival rate.

• Cocoon: Produces cocoons of a very striking bubblegum pink or salmon color. It is a cross specifically selected for the aesthetic color of its silk.

AliExpress (Industrial Chinese Hybrid)

It is colloquially named this because it comes from eggs purchased on Asian export platforms.

• Voltinism: Polyvoltine (they can breed non-stop all year round if there is food).

• Characteristics: White larvae, very voracious and extremely fast-growing. They are "eating machines."

• Cocoon: White, medium-small in size, and rounded in shape. The silk is of medium quality, but the number of broods per year is its greatest advantage.

Colombian

It is a variety adapted to tropical and subtropical climates.

• Voltinism: Polyvoltine.

• Characteristics: Very similar to Indian breeds. The larvae are resistant to high humidity and extreme heat, conditions that would kill a Sierra Morena.

• Cocoon: Usually small, with a lot of "borra" (loose outer silk) and colors ranging from yellowish white to pale green.
